London Night at Lantaren/Venster
Kode9 at the London Night, Lantaren/Venster Rotterdam, 16 March 2007
Now that the 2006/2007 season in Lantaren/Venster is coming to an end, it is a good time to look back on what has been achieved. One event especially has been successful for the theatre, in terms of introducing new music to the existing audience, and a new audience to the existing venue: the London Night.
Originally intended as a ‘one off’ during the UK Festival, it became a standard in the season, and an example of the musical evolution of Lantaren/Venster. Dubstep, the future dub music from South London that is part of the hardcore continuum, spread rapidly through the undergrounds of the world in early 2006, after the airing of the Dubstep Warz special by Maryann Hobbs on BBC Radio 1. And also in the Netherlands dance floors were infected by this sonic virus.
Lantaren/Venster has produced three dubstep events so far. These were:
29-09-2006 London Night
Kode9 & the Spaceape (Hyperdub/UK)
Digital Mystikz vs Loefah (DMZ/UK)
Sgt Pokes (DMZ/UK)
16-03-2007 London Night
Kode9 & the Spaceape (Hyperdub/UK)
Kromestar (Deep Medi Musik/UK)
Heny G (DMZ/UK)
U Dub (Viral Radio/NL)
Osiris (Dubstep.nl/NL)

16-06-2007 London Night
Coki-Digital Mystikz (DMZ/UK)
Hijak (Deep Medi Musik/UK)
Cyrus-Random Trio (Tectonic/UK)
U Dub (Viral Radio/NL)
Gomes (Oi/NL)
Sgt Pokes (DMZ/UK)
The London Night was supported by media partner Lijn5.com, a Dutch national radio station focused on urban music.
Plans for new events after the summer are growing. This new line of urban music will remain part of the program, both at the theatre and on location in the city.
