Sonic Warfare 7, time for something different
With the announcement of the 7th instalment of the bimonthly dubstep night Sonic Warfare, the Melkweg will wade into new territories of post-techno dubstep, bringing in a group that produces a more electronic form of bass music. Appleblim (Skull Disco/Bristol), Martyn (3024/Rotterdam), Peverelist (Punch Drunk/Bristol), Aardvarck (Rednose Distrikt/Amsterdam) // Forsaken (Punch Drunk/Bristol), Wedge (H.E.N.C.H./Bristol) and Gatekeeper (Skull Disco/Bristol). The night will be hosted by U Dub (Viral Radio/Amsterdam) and Andrew Makkinga (3voor12/Amsterdam).

While audibly not referencing as much to roots reggae as most Londoners around DMZ, relatively unknown producers as Wedge and Gatekeeper appear sonically related to the Spartan half-step pioneered by Loefah, who single-handedly created the genre with tracks like Horror Show and Mud. Appleblim, Peverelist, Martyn and Forsaken all have their own identities, but all know each other well and have played together before. Aardvarck is the newcomer in this line up. As post-Detroit producer with cult-status around the globe, he looks and talks like the reincarnation of Hunter S. Thompson. His take on dubstep adds a new direction to the decomposing scene; there are now almost too many appearances to stick to one definition.
Sonic Warfare part VII will take place on Friday night 9 May at the Melkweg, from 11 PM to 5 AM. Visit the SW MySpace page.
