Friend of audioculture.org Pierre Bastien will present Somewhere in the Dark, a work in progress in the exhibition Deep Screen at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam this Thursday. According to Bastien, the installation is not so much a work of art as a music machine that plays a Robert Wyatt song accompanied by Bastien’s arrangements of machines. The piece was part of the Biennale de Lyon in 2001, and travelled since. This is the fourth or fifth time Bastien has exhibited the work, each time adapting the piece, just like a work of music. When asked if he saw himself as a sculptor, he preferred to be a performer.

Pierre Bastien performed at the BImhuis in January with Philip Jeck. He has collaborated with various artists in recent months, like video artist Pierrick Sorin and drummer Steve Argüelles.

Other artists in the exhibition are among others Persijn Broersen & Margit Lukács, Mark Bain, and Jochem van der Spek. Deep Screen will run through 30 September.

Update 7 September:
Having seen the piece finally today, I would like to urge everyone to visit the last three weeks the exhibition is on display. Bastien’s work is a poetic installation that plays with light, sound and space. It is very playful and sober, and reminded me of the work of South-African artist William Kentridge.
