New music around the globe

“I believe that the use of noise to make music will continue and increase until we reach a music produced through aid of electrical instruments which will make available for musical purposes any and all sounds that can be heard.”
- John Cage (1937)
Flying Lotus, Hudson Mohawke, Icarus, Christian Marclay, Mika Vainio, Stephen O’Malley, Kode9 and Philip Jeck all were predicted by the prescient American composer John Cage in 1937 in Seattle. So, if the future is now, where is it at? A new monthly segment about new music around the globe.
15-10-2008 An Ocean of Rain, a new opera by Yannis Kyriakides. Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ, Amsterdam
http://oceanofrain.com
Experimental opera for five singers, ensemble and choir by the Ensemble MAE and the Scottish Theatre Cryptic. It tells of the interwoven lives, dreams and secrets of five women (a nun, a doctor, an architect, an archaeologist and a prostitute) in an orphanage on Haiti. Surgically killed by the Guardian after its premier at the Aldeburgh festival, this work has had mixed receptions. Make up your own mind. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zlUPoXdYgvQ)

Vladislav Delay has a quartett with Mika Vainio, Moritz von Oswald has a trio with Delay and Max Loderbauer, and Icarus‘ Ollie Bown and Sam Britton have formed Not Applicable. Next up is Detroit icon Carl Craig, with his Versus event at Cité de la Musique in Paris. C2 will collaborate with Les Siècles orchestra and Berlin dub architect Moritz von Oswald.

23-10-2008 Lukid at RBMA. Club Fellini, Barcelona.
http://myspace.com/lukid
North-Londoner Luke Blair is most likely to take the world by force soon. His album ‘Onandon’ has convinced critics and beats aficionados of his own approach to the sound. With a track like ‘Chord’ (up on MySpace) he is moving closer to the Hyperdub realm (he might be joined by Dorian Concept, who is present at RBMA in Barcelona too).
24-10-2008 Mike Slott, Dimlite and Take live at Beat Dimensions. ADE, Bimhuis, Amsterdam
Amsterdammer Cinnaman moved his Beat Dimensions night to the Bimhuis in May of this year, with two producers of underground acclaim: Flying Lotus and Hudson Mohawke. With 400 people inside the night ended up Flying Lotus’ best concert so far in his career (as he admitted recently in an interview with Dutch magazine DJ Broadcast.
The second edition is as promising, with HudMo’s Herald of Change partner Mike Slott, L.A.’s Take and Bern’s Dimlite. Local idiot savants Aardvarck and Cinnaman will disrupt the bar again.

http://www.last.fm/event/724579

Dutch alto saxophonist and sound artist Thomas Ankersmit lives in Berlin and has collaborated with multimedia pioneer Phil Niblock. Hild Sofie Tafjord creates erratic noise collages with French horn and electronics. The minimal soundscapes by BJ Nilsen appeared on Touch. Cello player Hildur Gudnadóttir gained notoriety with the Icelandic folk pop group Múm. This night is part of the Amsterdam Dance Event.
30-10-2008 Oren Ambarchi. Relax Bar, Los Angeles
http://www.last.fm/event/773774
Australian guitarist Oren Ambarchi makes as minimal a music anyone can make, without sounding esoteric or even outdated. He subtly carves a modernist space in sound, as if he were a sonic progeny of Le Corbusier. As part of doom metal outfit Grave Temple he plays with Sunn 0))) front man Stephen O’Malley In L.A. he will play his own solo work, as is released on Touch.
