A last minute intervention from municipality hinders SMART Project Space and Viral Radio to host one of the museumnacht afterparties this Saturday. Instead, Pierre Bastien, Machinefabriek and Soccer Committee have been added to the roster. From the newsletter:

Pierre Bastien | Soccer Committee and Machinefabriek
Saturday 1 November, 21.00 hrs
Location: Auditorium
Entrance: free

Pierre Bastien
“The musicians of his orchestra are machines. And the idea behind it is simple, efficient and poetic : to have traditional instruments (Chinese lute, Morrocan bendir, Javanese saron, koto, violin, sanza, etc.) played by a mechanical instrument made of meccano pieces and recycled turntable motors. These hybrid and self-playing sound sculptures perform a series of short pieces, charming and hypnotic. “(Michel F. Côté)

In the recent years, Pierre Bastien and his machines collaborated with video artist Pierrick Sorin, fashion designer Issey Miyake, dj Low, British singer and composer Robert Wyatt and the Trottola circus. The most recent compositions were released on Lowlands and Rephlex.
Machinefabriek and Soccer Committee
Rutger Zuydervelt has joined forces with Soccer Committee’s Mariska Baars on a multitude of previous projects but nothing has come close to the sheer force of their newest material. Baars’ bare-bones songs of lament and longing are taken apart and reassembled by Zuydervelt’s capable hands. Gentle acoustic guitar plucks and soothing harmonium tones work magically to highlight the brightest star on the album: Baars’ fragile, beautiful voice. She is in magnificent form, pulling emotions from the depths.
Viral Radio Presents Cinnaman, 1.1, Juha
Saturday 1 November, 24:00 - 02.00 hrs
Location: Auditorium & LAB 111
Entrance: Free

Cinnaman
DJ/producer Cinnaman started DJ-ing at the very young age of 12. After starting with hip hop, he bumped into Aardvarck, who showed him around Amsterdam and it’s carnival madness. He started producing music and is one of the linch-pins of Beat Dimensions, now making it’s mark on the Amsterdam urban beat and dubstep scene.

1.1
She loves everything about radio and got most of her considerable musical science from it. She’s the coordinator of Samurai.fm / Amsterdam. She produces the Faces Radio Show on samurai.fm.

Juha
One of Amsterdam’s foremost proponents of experimental music and initiator of Viral Radio. He is an avid curator, blogger, and radio presenter. Sonic Warfare, Bimhuis, audiculture.org are current projects of his that that inform his sound in elecronica, sound art, dub and experimental beatplay in this special performance.

Flying Lotus, Hudson Mohawke, Icarus, Christian Marclay, Mika Vainio, Stephen O’Malley, Kode9 and Philip Jeck all were predicted by the prescient American composer John Cage in 1937 in Seattle. So, if the future is now, where is it at? A new monthly segment about new music around the globe.

15-10-2008 An Ocean of Rain, a new opera by Yannis Kyriakides. Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ, Amsterdam
It tells of the interwoven lives, dreams and secrets of five women (a nun, a doctor, an architect, an archaeologist and a prostitute) in an orphanage on Haiti. Surgically killed by the Guardian after its premier at the Aldeburgh festival, this work has had mixed receptions. Make up your own mind. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zlUPoXdYgvQ)

16-10-2008 Appliances #7: Andreas Willers (guitar), Rudi Fischerlehner (drums), Isambard Khroustaliov (laptop), Lothar Ohlmeier (bass clarinet). Scooterworks, London
http://www.not-applicable.org/?p=151

Not Applicable is a group of improvising musicians from London consisting of Ollie Bown, Isambard Khroustaliov, Tom Arthurs, Lothar Ohlmeier, Maurizio Ravalico and many others. They are a new generation of electronically enhanced experimentalists in the tradition of Evan Parker, Derek Bailey and Tony Oxley, who have recently played at the Bimhuis and Lantaren/Venster in the Netherlands. Their nights in London are called Appliances, and they take place at Scooterworks.

18-10-2008 Versus: Carl Craig, Moritz von Oswald. Cité de la Musique, Paris
http://www.cite-musique.fr/anglais/evenement.aspx?id=5535

An interesting development that has been going in the second half of the noughties is the collaboration of studio producers live on stage. Vladislav Delay has a quartett with Mika Vainio, Moritz von Oswald has a trio with Delay and Max Loderbauer, and Icarus‘ Ollie Bown and Sam Britton have formed Not Applicable. Next up is Detroit icon Carl Craig, with his Versus event at Cité de la Musique in Paris. C2 will collaborate with Les Siècles orchestra and Berlin dub architect Moritz von Oswald.

21-10-2008 Daedelus live at Viral Radio, with Daddy Kev and Cinnaman. SMART Project Space, Amsterdam.
http://www.last.fm/event/772327

The first Viral Radio event since the festival at the Bimhuis and 11 in June, which saw performances by the Moritz von Oswald Trio, Kode9, the Bug with Ricky Ranking, Samiyam and Ras G. This time Viral is moving into the newly opened art institute SMART Project Space in Amsterdam, with the help of Ninja Daedelus and Low End’s Daddy Kev. Mind you, this on a Tuesday.

23-10-2008 Lukid at RBMA. Club Fellini, Barcelona.
http://myspace.com/lukid
North-Londoner Luke Blair is most likely to take the world by force soon. His album ‘Onandon’ has convinced critics and beats aficionados of his own approach to the sound. With a track like ‘Chord’ (up on MySpace) he is moving closer to the Hyperdub realm (he might be joined by Dorian Concept, who is present at RBMA in Barcelona too).

24-10-2008 Mike Slott, Dimlite and Take live at Beat Dimensions. ADE, Bimhuis, Amsterdam
Amsterdammer Cinnaman moved his Beat Dimensions night to the Bimhuis in May of this year, with two producers of underground acclaim: Flying Lotus and Hudson Mohawke. With 400 people inside the night ended up Flying Lotus’ best concert so far in his career (as he admitted recently in an interview with Dutch magazine DJ Broadcast.

The second edition is as promising, with HudMo’s Herald of Change partner Mike Slott, L.A.’s Take and Bern’s Dimlite. Local idiot savants Aardvarck and Cinnaman will disrupt the bar again.

25-10-2008 BJ Nilsen, Hild Sophie Tafjord, Hildur Gudnadóttir and Thomas Ankersmit. ADE, Bimhuis, Amsterdam
http://www.last.fm/event/724579

The varied artists included this evening are all fascinated with sound experiments, overtones and drones. Dutch alto saxophonist and sound artist Thomas Ankersmit lives in Berlin and has collaborated with multimedia pioneer Phil Niblock. Hild Sofie Tafjord creates erratic noise collages with French horn and electronics. The minimal soundscapes by BJ Nilsen appeared on Touch. Cello player Hildur Gudnadóttir gained notoriety with the Icelandic folk pop group Múm. This night is part of the Amsterdam Dance Event.

30-10-2008 Oren Ambarchi. Relax Bar, Los Angeles
http://www.last.fm/event/773774

Australian guitarist Oren Ambarchi makes as minimal a music anyone can make, without sounding esoteric or even outdated. He subtly carves a modernist space in sound, as if he were a sonic progeny of Le Corbusier. As part of doom metal outfit Grave Temple he plays with Sunn 0))) front man Stephen O’Malley In L.A. he will play his own solo work, as is released on Touch.

On an average Tuesday in Amsterdam 2,055 bikes get stolen. This happened last Tuesday, and this will happen next Tuesday. What is different though on Tuesday 21 October, is that the prolific Santa Monica producer and Ninja Tune progeny Daedelus will perform at SMART Project Space on the first Viral Radio event since the festival in June, at the Bimhuis and 11. Daedelus - real name Alfred Darlington - was so cordial to answer a few questions and give a top 11 of his current favourites.

Juha van ‘t Zelfde What do you think of the current crisis on Wall Street? Does this affect your work as a musician?

Daedelus The current crisis will have concequenses, but they may be strangely good: people always become more passionate about music during a recession; sales actually tend to increase. Also there is no retirement plan for musicians like myself so sadly no problem!

JZ What are your thoughts on the political campaigns of Democrats and Republicans? Would you write a song for either party?

D Haha! I did! It was very well recieved, check it out on Youtube under Obama Way so you can guess who I am voting for…

JZ If we would look at your music with Darwinian eyes, what makes it survive?

D Good will and constant evolution (the Darwinian answer); sitting still will get you eaten by another, always better to tell the story of moving on.

JZ Are you feeling a global power shift from West to East?

D Yes in fact, touring recently in China really opened my eyes to the changes underfoot. America is so difficult for culture, perhaps a wake up call is in order. All the US does is think of ideas. Perhaps we should reward these inovations.

JZ What can we expect from your Amsterdam show?

D It all depends on what you bring: want to party and we’ll party, want to cry and we’ll cry together. I think the same can be said from Daddy Kev except he is bring firepower! Maybe I’ll try so too.

JZ Thank you.

D Thank you, and best until!

Top 10 producers right now:

1. Samiyam
2. Musinah
3. Nosaj Thing
4. Dimlite
5. Ras G
6. Mike Slott
7. Thavius Beck
8. Flying Lotus
9. Current Value
10. Mrk1
11. Maybe Zomby or Take or Carlos Nino or SlowJamDiscoJitGrimeRave

For decades the Globe Unity Orchestra has been bringing together the most renowned musicians from the international experimental improvisation scene. Every performance is a unique opportunity to see wayward soloists from several generations and countries on the same stage. The ensemble’s collective improvisations have much in common with the ecstatic free jazz of Albert Ayler and John Coltrane’s ‘Ascension’, as well as with the European avant-garde music of the last century.

After a fifteen-year hiatus the orchestra was recently resurrected. Critics are unanimously impressed with the impact of the renewed ensemble. ‘An amazing experience on record but exponentially more powerful in person.’ (All About Jazz) ‘Essential listening for anyone with even a passing interest in European free improvisation.’ (Jazz Times)

This could have been written in a Twitter-stream. Unfortunately, or luckily, I do not use Twitter. Therefor I write it in plain English: Gavin Bryars‘ Sinking of the Titanic (Touch), as performed by Gavin Bryars, Philip Jeck and Alter Ego is an obligatory purchase for anyone that has ever liked any modern composition in the 20th century, whether it is Schoenberg, Feldman or even Pärt and Johannsson. Add the (for lack of a better word) hauntologistic quality of Philip Jeck’s turntablism and you draw a crowd of improvisation and electronica. Buy it here, or read more about it here.
