Australian-born musician Ben Frost has defined a very particular sound, which blends in elements of modern classical, dark doommetal and electronica into haunting cinematic soundscapes. A type of sound that made Frost’s album Theory Of Machines (released in 2007) cause quite a stir within the electronic music community, shattering genre conventions. By The Throat, Frost’s latest album that made it into almost every best-of list in 2009, uses the same principles. Filled with contradiction, responsible for intense blending, causing tension and violent clashes.

From the very first tone Frost manage to create this unnatural tense atmosphere, unstable, always changing. Beauty mixed with subtle almost (un)touchable violence, hidden away just beneath the surface. Tension that keeps you on the edge of your seat. The album didn’t get a lot of attention and none on Audioculture. So after finding myself buying the album in my local record store last week I decided to make up for that and introduce, tip or just remind you. By The Throat is not easy, yet despite the disturbing undercurrents this album never ceases to sound beautiful. - Florian Weigl

In 2010, Viral Radio will organise 6 city editions, in which it will zoom in on defining electronic music scenes around the world. On 5 March, the city in focus is Glasgow, the home of emotronic, hypersoul and aquacrunk. If the music of contemporary Bristol (with Joker, Gemmy and Guido) is purple, then Glasgow is fluorescent magenta and acid green.

On the line up for this edition are three stellar producers. WARP prodigy Rustie will play his first live set in the Netherlands. He is joined by fellow Scott Loops Haunt, who has been impressing audiences in Europe lately. Irish-Wegian Mike Slott, partner of Hudson Mohawke in Heralds of Change, has been added at the last minute, since he is visiting Europe for the Red Bull Music Academy. As always, Viral Radio host Juha and Cinnaman will be your city guides on this journey.

To get in the mood for this event, listen to the latest release of Mike Slott on LuckyMe via the 3VOOR12 Luisterpaal.

Vrijdag 12 februari speelde Baths tijdens Viral Radio in De Verdieping.

Yuri Boselie (Den Bosch, 1983) was 15 toen Napster live ging.

Zie Beat Dimensions is in Amsterdam, Brainfeeder in Los Angeles, Hyperdub in Londen of Lucky Me in Glasgow.

A few months ago we asked our good friend Aardvarck, if he was given the chance to invite someone for Viral Radio, who he would choose. “Mala,” was his immediate answer, followed by an endless stream of unintelligible animal noises, “hoer” and “zijn we er al?” Mala will now play alongside Aardvarck, Cinnaman and Juha at the sixth Viral Radio event at TrouwAmsterdam. He will be joined by his friend, brother-from-another-mother and fellow demilitarized zone pacifist Sgt. Pokes.

In the evening, starting around 8 PM, Viral Radio will present the second CDR night. Adopted from London, the night is intended to create a social network, platform or hub for aspiring producers, avid supporters and kindred spirits who enjoy new ventures into electronic music. Hosted by Juha, Cinnaman and Mamiko Motto, a line of guests will be interviewed about their music practice, amongst whom Mr. Aardvarck himself. Visitors can bring their music on CDRs, which then will be played on our professional club soundsystem, while their names and track titles will be beamed on the wall.

CDR has been adopted by De Verdieping as a monthly night to share ideas and music. It has been transferred from the Wednesday to the Friday, to connect with Viral Radio and to benefit from the presence of international artists as Hudson Mohawke, Mala, Nosaj Thing, Harmonic 313, and all the others that come through the Viral Radio hub.

Viral Radio starts at 10.30 PM. Tickets are 12 euros, and are available at Rush Hour, online and at the door of TrouwAmsterdam. CDR starts at 8 PM. Tickets are 5 euros, but entrance is free of charge with a CDR of your music. Visitors of CDR can stay for Viral Radio without paying any more.

This is not an official Viral Radio event but since one of us is doing bits and pieces of live electronic music concerts here and there in Amsterdam, we thought you might be interested. And since you seemed to like the Brainfeeder attack last Friday, knowing that another artist from that Los Angeles pedigree is visiting Amsterdam hardly seems a burden.

Therefore we would like to invite you for this Wednesday at De Verdieping where two of the kindest people of electronic music will be performing live: Daedelus and Pierre Bastien. The former hails from Santa Monica, played bassoon and clarinet before solitarily enjoying rave music at a young age, and participating in the development of one of the sleekest music devices known to man, the Monome. The latter is a French composer, multi-instrumentalist and literature Phd from Rotterdam, idolised by Squarepusher, Aphex Twin and Icarus, who constructs his own landscapes of automated music machines, forming an orchestra of kinetic instruments.

Bastien will premier new work, while Daedelus will perform with and talk about the Monome. This event takes place in the underground basement of Trouw Amsterdam. Doors open at 8.30 PM, and admission is a mere 8 euros. Here are the links for Last FM and Facebook. We hope to see you there.

The performance of Kode9 & the Spaceape at the Bimhuis resembled, in duration, complexity and repetition, a traditional symphony. Their physical movement on stage was a bonus: a dark ballet of invisible limbs and ghostly vocals forming an architecture of abstraction. The track ‘Other Man’ can be added to the canon of electronic music, such imaginative power and urgent force it conveyed. Wireless electricity.

To celebrate 1 year of Beat Dimensions concerts at the Bimhuis, we have invited three of our favourite musicians to perform live in Amsterdam. Kode9 & the Spaceape will demonstrate their Bass Fiction live set, a rhythmically desolate and sonically dense architecture of sub frequencies, whilst Dimlite will display yet again why he is a master of mosaic textures and imaginative drum patterns. Digikid Cinnaman and laureate Juha will play music from a not so distant future in the bar before, between and after the concerts.

Doors open around 11, and the concerts start at 11.30. We look forward to seeing you there.
